Psoriatic Arthritis Symptoms in the Feet and Ankles

Psoriatic arthritis is an inflammatory condition linked to psoriasis that can affect the joints in the feet and ankles. It causes pain, swelling, and stiffness that can make standing or walking uncomfortable. Some patients have swollen toes that create a sausage-like appearance. Others develop pain where a tendon or ligament attaches to a bone that frequently affects the heel or the bottom of the foot. Changes in foot shape can also develop, making it harder to find shoes that fit comfortably and provide proper support.

Psoriatic arthritis can also affect the toenails. Small dents in the nail surface or nails that lift away from the nail bed are signs that should not be ignored. These changes can appear along with painful joints or develop before joint symptoms become obvious. Swelling in the ankles, feet, or toes can limit movement and reduce balance while walking. Pain in the heel, sole, or toes can interfere with daily activities. Symptoms sometimes come and go, but repeated inflammation can damage joints and reduce normal foot function without proper care. Early attention is important because lasting joint damage can begin before severe pain develops.

A podiatrist plays an important role in diagnosing and managing psoriatic arthritis affecting the feet. The examination includes checking for joint swelling, changes in foot shape, and nail problems that can be linked to the condition. Imaging studies can show joint damage and help confirm the diagnosis. Treatment options include custom orthotics to improve foot support and reduce pressure on painful areas. A podiatrist also recommends shoes that provide proper support and enough room for swollen or misshapen joints. Regular follow-up visits help track changes in the feet and ankles and allow treatment to be adjusted as symptoms change. If you have symptoms of psoriatic arthritis in the feet, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for effective relief and management tips.

Arthritic Foot Care

Arthritis is a joint disorder that involves the inflammation of different joints in your body, such as those in your feet. Arthritis is often caused by a degenerative joint disease and causes mild to severe pain in all affected areas. In addition to this, swelling and stiffness in the affected joints can also be a common symptom of arthritis.

In many cases, wearing ill-fitting shoes can worsen the effects and pain of arthritis. Wearing shoes that have a lower heel and extra room can help your feet feel more comfortable. In cases of rheumatoid arthritis, the arch in your foot may become problematic. Buying shoes with proper arch support that contour to your feet can help immensely.

Alleviating Arthritic Pain

  • Exercises that stretch the foot can prevent further pain and injury and increase mobility
  • Most of the pain can be alleviated with anti-inflammatory drugs, heat, and topical medications
  • Massages can help temporarily alleviate pain.

It is best to see your doctor for the treatment that is right for your needs and symptoms. Conditions vary, and a podiatrist can help you determine the right method of care for your feet.

Do You Suffer From Painful Feet?

Painful deformities, such as hammertoes, can be treated. Stop living with foot pain, and have beautiful feet again!

Causes and Symptoms of Painful Flat Feet Explained

Flat feet are a structural condition in which the natural arch of the foot is lowered or absent, causing the foot to rest flat on the ground. This can affect how weight is distributed across the foot and may lead to discomfort. While some individuals with flat feet experience no symptoms, others develop pain and instability. Understanding this condition helps individuals recognize when treatment may be needed.

Common symptoms include pain in the heel or arch that becomes more noticeable during or after activity. Many people experience pain that worsens with activity, particularly during walking or running. Swelling along the inside of the ankle may also occur, often due to strain on the tendons that support the arch. Additional symptoms may include stiffness, fatigue, and changes in walking pattern. These signs can interfere with daily activities if left untreated.

Flat feet can develop due to several causes, including inherited foot structure, injury, or gradual weakening of supportive tissues. Risk factors include obesity, prolonged standing, and wearing shoes that do not provide adequate support. Conditions such as arthritis or tendon dysfunction can also increase the likelihood of arch collapse. Understanding these contributing factors can help guide prevention and early intervention strategies.

Proper management focuses on supporting the arch and reducing strain on the foot. Supportive footwear, custom orthotics, and targeted exercises can help improve comfort and stability. Addressing symptoms early can prevent progression and reduce the risk of complications. Maintaining foot health is essential for overall mobility and well being. If you have flat feet that are causing discomfort, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist for effective relief and management tips.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

Treatment

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.
