Morton’s Neuroma and Insoles

Morton’s neuroma is one of many various foot conditions that can negatively impact the health of the feet. When a patient has Morton’s neuroma, this typically means that the tissue surrounding a nerve in the foot leading to the toes has become thick. As a result of this thickening, patients can feel pain and they might feel sensations as if there was a pebble in their shoe. There are several different steps that an individual might consider taking to address Morton’s neuroma. In consultation with a health professional, such as a podiatrist, an individual might decide to treat Morton’s neuroma by using devices such as insoles. The use of these insoles can essentially absorb shock when walking, it can also provide support for the arch, and it can correct alignment issues. All of these adjustments can relieve the pain felt by Morton’s neuroma. If you are someone that is living with Morton’s neuroma, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist today.

Morton’s Neuroma

Morton's neuroma is a painful foot condition that commonly affects the areas between the second and third or third and fourth toe, although other areas of the foot are also susceptible. Morton’s neuroma is caused by an inflamed nerve in the foot that is being squeezed and aggravated by surrounding bones.

What Increases the Chances of Having Morton’s Neuroma?

  • Ill-fitting high heels or shoes that add pressure to the toe or foot
  • Jogging, running or any sport that involves constant impact to the foot
  • Flat feet, bunions, and any other foot deformities

Morton’s neuroma is a very treatable condition. Orthotics and shoe inserts can often be used to alleviate the pain on the forefront of the feet. In more severe cases, corticosteroids can also be prescribed. A Common Reason to Have Heel Pain

Many people will experience heel pain at some point in their lives. There are various reasons why heel pain can develop, and it may gradually become worse if prompt medical attention is not received. A common cause of heel pain is the foot condition that is known as plantar fasciitis. This happens when the plantar fascia becomes torn or inflamed. This can be a runner’s worst nightmare, and running is often stopped until treatment is completed. Heel pain and the corresponding conditions that caused it may be prevented by losing weight, if applicable, and maintaining healthy eating habits. Additionally, it is beneficial to wear appropriate shoes, and this may include choosing shoes that have a low and cushioned heel. If you have heel pain for any reason, it is suggested that you schedule a consultation with a podiatrist as quickly as possible who can determine the cause and offer correct treatment procedures.

Many people suffer from bouts of heel pain. For more information, contact one of our podiatrists of Nassau Foot & Ankle. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Causes of Heel Pain

Heel pain is often associated with plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissues that extends along the bottom of the foot. A rip or tear in this ligament can cause inflammation of the tissue.

Achilles tendonitis is another cause of heel pain. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon will cause pain from fractures and muscle tearing. Lack of flexibility is also another symptom.

Heel spurs are another cause of pain. When the tissues of the plantar fascia undergo a great deal of stress, it can lead to ligament separation from the heel bone, causing heel spurs.

Why Might Heel Pain Occur?

  • Wearing ill-fitting shoes
  • Wearing non-supportive shoes
  • Weight change
  • Excessive running

Treatments

Heel pain should be treated as soon as possible for immediate results. Keeping your feet in a stress-free environment will help. If you suffer from Achilles tendonitis or plantar fasciitis, applying ice will reduce the swelling. Stretching before an exercise like running will help the muscles. Using all these tips will help make heel pain a condition of the past.

Stretches for Flat Feet

Collapsed arches are another name for flat feet. It is a condition that most babies are born with, and the aches generally develop during the teenage years. There may be existing conditions that can prevent the arch from forming, including obesity, pregnancy, and arthritis. Flat feet are an abnormal foot structure, and many people with this condition have aches and foot pain. When specific stretches are performed several times per week, that arch may develop and become stronger. A heel stretch can be beneficial. This can be done by standing and resting the hands on a chair while keeping both heels on the floor. As the front leg is bent while rocking back and forth, a gentle stretch can be found in the back leg. After holding the position for several seconds, this stretch can be repeated on the other leg. Rolling the foot on a tennis ball may help to improve the arch and can be performed for up to three minutes on each foot. If you have flat feet, it is suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can help you to manage this condition.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

Treatment

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.

There is a reason many women experience swollen ankles during their pregnancy. The baby requires approximately 50 percent more fluids and blood to meet its growing needs. The medical term for swollen feet and ankles is known as edema, and it is normal during pregnancy, despite the discomfort it can bring. There are simple and effective measures that can be taken to control the amount of fluid that collects in the ankles. These can include drinking plenty of water daily and engaging in a gentle exercise program as often as possible. Walking and swimming are effective methods to keep the body moving, which can help to evenly distribute fluids that collect in the feet. It is important to wear shoes that fit well and are comfortable, in addition to reducing sodium intake. If you would like helpful tips on how to improve foot comfort while pregnant, it is suggested that you speak with a podiatrist who can address any concerns you may have.

Pregnant women with swollen feet can be treated with a variety of different methods that are readily available. What Foot Problems Can Arise During Pregnancy?

One problem that can occur is overpronation, which occurs when the arch of the foot flattens and tends to roll inward.  This can cause pain and discomfort in your heels while you’re walking or even just standing up, trying to support your baby.

Another problem is edema, or swelling in the extremities. This often affects the feet during pregnancy but tends to occur in the later stages.

How Can I Keep My Feet Healthy During Pregnancy?

  • Wearing orthotics can provide extra support for the feet and help distribute weight evenly
  • Minimize the amount of time spent walking barefoot
  • Wear shoes with good arch support
  • Wear shoes that allow for good circulation to the feet
  • Elevate feet if you experience swelling
  • Massage your feet
  • Get regular, light exercise, such as walking, to promote blood circulation to the feet
