Causes of Hammertoe Deformity

A hammertoe deformity develops when a toe bends abnormally at the middle joint, creating a fixed Z-shaped position that makes it difficult to straighten. The second toe is most commonly affected, although the third or fourth toes may also be involved. A hammertoe deformity typically develops from tendon imbalances that pull the toe into the bent position. Contributing factors include unusually long toe or metatarsal bones, improper alignment of joints in the foot, inflammatory conditions like arthritis, and years of wearing shoes with a tight or narrow toe box. Because part of the affected toe sits higher than normal, constant friction against footwear can cause corns, calluses, or open sores. Pain is often noticed while walking, and some people also feel pressure in the ball of the foot. A podiatrist can evaluate the deformity, provide effective treatment, and discuss whether surgery is necessary. Hammertoe is a foot deformity that affects the joints of the second, third, fourth, or fifth toes of your feet. It is a painful foot condition in which these toes curl and arch up, which can often lead to pain when wearing footwear.

Causes

Genetics – People who are genetically predisposed to hammertoe are often more susceptible

Arthritis – Because arthritis affects the joints in your toes, further deformities stemming from arthritis can occur

Trauma – Direct trauma to the toes could potentially lead to hammertoe

Ill-fitting shoes – Undue pressure on the front of the toes from ill-fitting shoes can potentially lead to the development of hammertoe

Treatment

Orthotics – Custom made inserts can be used to help relieve pressure placed on the toes and therefore relieve some of the pain associated with it

Medications – Oral medications such as anti-inflammatories or NSAIDs could be used to treat the pain and inflammation hammertoes causes. Injections of corticosteroids are also sometimes used

Surgery – In more severe cases where the hammertoes have become more rigid, foot surgery is a potential option

Yoga Stretches to Improve Ankle Mobility

Strong and flexible ankles are essential for balance and stability, and yoga offers excellent stretches to enhance mobility. Standing on tiptoes strengthens the calves and improves control, while tree pose, or standing tall on one leg with hands reaching toward the sky, challenges balance and ankle stability. Awkward pose, or sitting back into an invisible chair with arms extended forward, builds strength in the lower legs, and squats help increase ankle flexibility and range of motion. Practicing these poses regularly can reduce stiffness and prevent injuries during daily activities or sports. A podiatrist can assess your ankle alignment, recommend additional exercises, and treat any underlying issues that limit movement. Stretching the Feet

Stretching the muscles in the foot is an important part in any physical activity. Feet that are tight can lead to less flexibility and make you more prone to injury. One of the most common forms of foot pain, plantar fasciitis, can be stretched out to help ease the pain. Stretching can not only ease pain from plantar fasciitis but also prevent it as well. However, it is important to see a podiatrist first to determine if stretching is right for you. Podiatrists can also recommend other ways to stretch your feet. Once you know whether stretching is right for you, here are some excellent stretches you can do.

  • Using a foam roller or any cylindrical object (a water bottle or soda can will do), roll the object under your foot back and forth. You should also exert pressure on the object. Be sure to do this to both feet for a minute. Do this exercise three times each.
  • Similar to the previous exercise, take a ball, such as a tennis ball, and roll it under your foot while seated and exert pressure on it.
  • Grab a resistance band or towel and take a seat. If you are using a towel, fold it length wise. Next put either one between the ball of your foot and heel and pull with both hands on each side towards you. Hold this for 15 seconds and then switch feet. Do this three times for each foot.
  • Finally hold your big toe while crossing one leg over the other. Pull the toe towards you and hold for 15 seconds. Once again do this three times per foot.

It is best to go easy when first stretching your foot and work your way up. If your foot starts hurting, stop exercising to ice and rest the foot. It is advised that you then see a podiatrist for help.

Flat Feet May Cause Foot Pain

The medical condition Pes Planus, or more commonly known as flat feet, is often noticeable while standing with your feet flat on the floor and no visible arch is present. Oftentimes babies are born with flat feet and the arch develops with age. There is a small percentage of adults who never develop an arch which is said to be caused by extended stress or a traumatic injury. Flat feet can also result from an abnormal foot structure, genetic factors, obesity, or an injury to the foot. The function of the arch is to help balance weight across the body, in addition to determining a walking style. If no pain coincides with flat feet immediate care is not needed, although shoe inserts or custom orthotics may be recommended to prevent future injuries. One common symptom of flat feet is foot pain, which can develop from strained ligaments and muscles. What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.  

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet

Treatment
